Transcript

Hi, sweetheart. It's Dr. Mira. Welcome to lesson 2: The 10-second street scan. A repeatable pattern for scanning a block the moment you step outside. Let me walk you through this properly, the way I would if we were sitting together. Before anything physical, your eyes and your attention do the work. Awareness is not fear — it is simply noticing, on purpose, without tensing up. Here is the pattern I want you to learn: scan wide, then narrow. Sweep the whole block first, then check the three closest people, then check your exits. Your exits are doors that are open, lit, and staffed. A bodega, a pharmacy, a hotel lobby, a busy diner. Name two of them every time you walk somewhere new. Distance is your best tool. Almost everything is solved by adding ten feet before anything happens. Before you help anyone — someone who fell, someone who looks hurt — check the environment first. Look for traffic, fire, water, another person, anything that could put you down next. A second person hurt is a worse problem, not a better one. The most common mistake is looking down at your phone at the exact moment you cross into a new block. Look up first, then look down. Practice this on a quiet block first, then a busier one. Small steps count. If something feels off, you are allowed to leave. You never need a reason, and you never owe anyone an explanation. Now here's how I want you to practice. Read the lesson once, picture yourself doing it, and then do it for real one time today. One repetition is enough to start. If it feels awkward the first time, that's normal. Awkward means new, not wrong. That's all for this one. Watch it as many times as you need. I'm so proud of you for being here.

What this lesson covers

A repeatable pattern for scanning a block the moment you step outside.

Module goal: Learn to read a block before anything happens, so most trouble never reaches you.

What you'll be able to do

Run a repeatable 10-second scan the moment you reach the street.

Key points

  • A fixed pattern beats random looking — it works even when you're tired.
  • Ten seconds is enough. You are sampling, not surveying.

Step by step

  1. 1Seconds 1–3: look down the block ahead of you.
  2. 2Seconds 4–6: check the opposite sidewalk.
  3. 3Seconds 7–8: glance behind using a shop window or a natural turn.
  4. 4Seconds 9–10: pick your safe door and your walking line.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping the look behind.
  • Doing the scan with headphones in both ears.

New York City scenario

Coming out of the 47–50 St station, you run the scan and immediately choose the building side because scaffolding blocks the curb side.

Practice drill

Run the full 10-second scan at your next three street corners.

Quick check

Which part of the scan do people most often skip?
