Cerebral palsy

Cross with
extra time & rhythm.

Tools for steady pacing, extended signal times, and corners that work with your gait.

Step-paced crossing

60 steps/min

A steady beat helps maintain a consistent gait across the crosswalk. Match one step to each pulse.

Extended crossing simulator

walk

Practice with a 38-second extended phase (20s walk + 18s flash) like an APS-equipped corner.

Everyday tips

  • Push the Accessible Pedestrian Signal (APS) button to extend crossing time at supported corners.
  • Plan routes that use mid-block refuge islands so you can rest halfway across wide avenues.
  • Avoid Midtown 4–6 PM if crowds destabilize your gait — try 10 AM–2 PM windows.
  • Carry a folding cane or use a rollator at uneven sidewalks (cobblestone, scaffolding plates).
  • If a 'walk' phase is too short, wait for a fresh cycle rather than starting late.

Always cross with the signal. For new routes, scout with a companion first when possible.
